Waikiki sunset, Oahu, HI

Sunset from the Waikiki Moana Surfrider which is right on the beach. This is the old dame of Waikiki and it just turned 107 years old last weekend. One morning we hiked to the top of Diamond head which was great fun. Another morning we took a bird watching stroll through the Koko Crater garden - saw quite a few species - and a stroll along the diamondhead lighthouse cliffs down to the beach. Afternoons were spent at the Waikiki beach or pool.

Kailua Bay, Oahu, HI

We picked up some sand chairs from Wal-Mart and headed up the eastern coast stopping at Kailua Bay to swim. Is is a beautiful beach with gentle bay for swimming. Was very quiet too. We think if we ever go back - we may look for accomodations in this area.

Givannis Shrimp Truck, North Shore, Oahu, HI

We tried two shrimp trucks: Giovanni's and Romeys. Both were good but
Giovanni's peel & eat scampi shrimp drenched in garlic and butter won the "first round" prize from us. Was the best meal of the week - and at $12 bucks - by far the cheapest! Down the road at Romeys - we ordered a pound of steamed shrimp - which were also good - real fresh with heads and legs attached. You can also fish for prawns at Romeys in the aqua-ponds.

Sunset Beach, Hale'iwa, Oahu, HI

Two nights at the Keiki Bungalows on the north shore on Sunset beach - next to Waeimea Bay. The surf was about 6-8 ft faces - not the huge the 20-30 ft like I had hoped. One morning we walked the entire Waeimea Sanctuary to the water falls. Afternoons were spent on quiet Sunset beach - listening to the pounding surf, playing with the beach dogs, watching the whales off shore. The whales were really active. About a 1/2 mile off shore I spotted a humpback breaching three times in a row - then it did about 10 side flipper slaps. We also saw others doing 10-12 tail slaps in a row. Of course - when I had my camera out - the whales were pretty docile.
